Why does Baby Wear Helmet?

Why does Baby Wear Helmet

Why does Baby Wear Helmet – Some time ago, I saw, at an event I attended, a baby wearing an accessory that caught my eye. It was a little cape, charming, but it is not common to see babies or children, so it did not go unnoticed.

But I actually decided to talk about this because a blog reader shared with me that her six-month-old son was diagnosed with positional brachycephaly, which is one of those changes in the structure and shape of the skull in which helmet can be used (I want to thank the reader’s affection for sending me this suggestion so that we can guide other mothers).

But anyway, why is the helmet used? For you to understand this correctly, I must give some explanations before. A little complex, but necessary. Come on…

The helmet is used to correct changes in the shape of the skull. We can have two origins for these alterations: positional origin changes and craniosynostosis. The positional source changes happen due to several factors: position the baby is in the uterus of the mother, complications during childbirth in cases of multiple pregnancy or habit of always being in the same situation to sleep or time to breastfeed. Positional origin changes include posterior (more common) positional plagiocephaly and positional brachycephaly (much more rare and, when it does, it is usually posterior positional brachycephaly).

Already the craniosynostosis caused by the premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures, and among the different types of craniosynostosis, we have anterior brachycephaly, scaphocephaly, anterior plagiocephaly and posterior plagiocephaly (the most common of which is scaphocephaly). This a problem that is not corrected with the use of helmet or with the simple change of position with which the child is placed in the crib, baby comfort, etc … Why the realization of the early diagnosis is is as important as some cases require surgical treatment, which should be performed preferably until the sixth month of life. If in the cases indicated (complex craniosynostosis, with more than one committed suture) the surgery is not performed, there may be impairment of the cerebral growth and development, besides the aesthetic of Hospital Sabará ).

The diagnosis of craniosynostosis is through tests that will verify the existence of a closed suture and possible alterations in the facial bones and the nervous parenchyma. The main exam used for this diagnosis is computed tomography of the skull with three-dimensional bone reconstruction.

The most common in terms of changes in the shape of the head is the child presenting with a positional cranial asymmetry, the most common of which is posterior positional plagiocephaly, which usually occurs in almost 100% of cases during gestation (by the position it is inside the womb) or in the principal 6 months of life (also by the position it is usually placed to sleep, rest, etc …). In this case, changing the position in which the baby is usually placed or wearing a helmet is indicated and can correct the problem (but, very importantly, this correction only happens if the treatment starts early, before full development occurs of bones of the skull, which usually occurs up to 2 years of life). – Why does Baby Wear Helmet

The use of the helmet

Why does Baby Wear Helmet – As I have already mentioned above, the use of cranial orthoses – or the well-known helmet – to correct problems of cranial asymmetry only works when it comes to positional cranial asymmetries (the most common being positional posterior plagiocephaly). However, some neurosurgeons indicate the use of the accessory after craniosynostosis surgeries to help shape the shape of the baby’s head.

From the measurements obtained in the exams, the custom helmet is made that will contain the growth of certain areas and leave the flattened free to develop.

The baby must use the orthosis since very small, with three months of life, emphasizing that the treatment only takes effect if realized until the 18 months. After that, it is no longer possible to induce the growth of the skull, because by the age of 2 the shape of the head is almost equal in adulthood.

On the helmet, the doctors guarantee that the children do not feel any pain, only a discomfort in the first days, of course.

What draws attention is that the orthosis should be used 23 hours a day, that is, the baby can only be without the helmet for an hour a day, during which time the item should be sanitized. This routine will be maintained for about three to four months, depending on each frame.

The calm that can prevent the changes in the case of the positional cranial asymmetries. Check out some tips:

  • The best way to prevent variations in the skull is to alternate the support in the head of the child at bedtime, while breastfeeding, changing diapers, bathing or even playing. But if you have noticed any prominence watch the child so that it uses as support the area of the head that is more developed, leaving the other free. For this use pillows, cushions or rolls to sleep or play, preventing the child from turning to the side that is already accustomed;
  • Pay attention to the position of the crib; it should be in a place where the child can receive stimuli from several locations, not only in one direction (like the right side). If you can not change the location of the crib, sometimes put the child lying on the feet of the bed, so the headrest be on a different side;
  • Limit the time of the child to stay in the baby comfort or the highchair. These accessories are great, but restrict the movement of the head;
  • keep an eye on the position of the child’s head until it is time to play. When you are around, place the baby on his belly, so he does not support the head and even strengthens the muscles.
