How to Change Your Car Tires

Change Your Car Tires

Well Change Your Car Tires

To improve the handling and performance of your vehicle, we recommend that you mount four identical or similar tires. If your tires are not the same, it is possible that one of the trains will not respond as quickly or in the same way as the other, which will result in a difficulty in controlling the entire vehicle.

Change Your Car Tires

Changing a single tire

If your tires have a minimum degree of wear, i.e. the depth of the main grooves is maximum, but you need to change a tire damaged by a puncture or an accident, you must replace it with the same tire. The new tire must have the same characteristics as the old one and be of the same brand, of the same profile/structure, of the same speed/weight indices and of course of the same dimensions.

What the road code specifies:
“The difference between the depth of the main grooves of two tires mounted on the same axle shall not exceed 5 millimeters.”

Change of two tires

If two of your tires have reached their maximum wear or are damaged, you must replace them with identical or similar tires. Always choose tires of the same characteristics as those already on your vehicle.

Why fit the new (or less worn) tires to the rear rather than the front? The loss of adhesion of the rear wheels is not or little controlled by the driver. Mounting new tires at the rear allows you to balance the adhesion between the two axles and thus increase your safety: the front axle, despite low adhesion, is controlled by your action on the steering wheel, while the rear axle benefits from the optimum adhesion provided by new tires.

When two new tires are installed on your vehicle, do not hesitate to ask your mechanic why one of the tire trains has worn out faster than the other. This may be due to bad parallelism or poor geometry (click here for more information).

Tires online recommend not to wait until the wear indicator is reached because, in the case of rain, the aquaplaning will be promoted from 2.0 mm or 3.0 mm for a wide tire.

What the road code specifies:
“The 1.6 mm wear indicator indicates the legal minimum gum height.”

Change of four tires

If your four tires are worn at the same time, you have greater flexibility in the selection of new tires. If you are satisfied with your old tires, you can pick up the same ones. On the other hand, if you want to change for another profile or another brand, it will, of course, be necessary to know if these tires are suitable for your vehicle. You will then be able to choose more enduring tires, more comfortable, more efficient, depending on the criteria you are looking for and your driving, and always according to the recommendations and approvals of the manufacturer of your vehicle.

After you have ensured the number of tires to be changed, you need to determine the size and type of tires you are looking for.

What is the value for money?

If you consider that the tyre best suited to your vehicle is too expensive compared to another brand, remember to consider in the price of tires other criteria such as longevity, performance, comfort, quality, etc. What will be the additional cost per kilometer caused by cheaper tires?

If you intend to roll 30 000 kilometers with these tyres and the tyre that best suits your vehicle costs EUR 10 more than another brand, you would be surprised to know that the cost difference per kilometre is 0.00025 EUR. Does this difference of 10 EUR justify the purchase of a less suitable tyre?
