Mix and test a cleaning solution. Pour 1/2 gallon of water into a bucket and add 1/4 cup of ammonia. Dampen the corner of a cleaning cloth with the solution and use it to wet a small portion of any shoe fabric to make sure the color is firm. Most running shoes are man-made materials that will not fade, but some have suede finishes that are vulnerable to fading. Mix and try a solution with less ammonia if bleeding occurs.

Immerse the New Balance sneakers in the ammonia solution. Remove the shoelaces from the shoes and toss them into the bucket. Completely submerge the stinky sneakers in the bucket and let them soak for 45 minutes.

Scrub the shoes inside and out. Run a scrub brush or toothbrush over the outside surfaces and trim. Wet a cleaning cloth with the ammonia solution and rub it over the inside of the shoes.

Rinse and dry thoroughly. Rinse with the hose sprayer. Continue rinsing until the water runs clean out of the shoes. Shake out all excess water and leave the New Balance shoes in a cool, dry place for 24 hours.
